Diabetes

It's National Diabetes Alert Day.

US Diabetes Stats - Diabetes Alert Day 2017

Eight million.

That’s the number of Americans living with diabetes who don’t know it. With millions of people undiagnosed (and because March 28th is American Diabetes Alert Day) we’re sharing a few simple ways to help you take charge of your own health. #Takecareofyourself is the new #treatyourself.

Be aware

When 9 out of 10 Americans who are most at risk for Type 2 diabetes don’t know it, something needs to change. Taking this super quick quiz to see if you, a friend or a family member might be at risk for diabetes can be a first step to increasing overall health outcomes and drive better self-care. Check out this list of causes and symptoms to gain a better understanding of the condition.

Listen

We know diabetes and other chronic conditions can be tricky to manage, but it’s critical to listen to your body to help you through. You know your body best, so listen to its needs instead of ignoring them and pushing through. Feeling tired? Take a quick nap or a five-minute break at work. Know someone with diabetes? Here are a few tips to help you be a great listener and extra supportive.

Connect

Know someone with the same chronic condition as you? Don’t be afraid to share your story with those who are going through the same thing. “It takes a village” really does apply. An easy way to stay connected is by tracking your food intake and exercise through an app so other folks can see it - that way, you can learn from one another and lean on each other for support. (Still not convinced? Read this.)

Enjoy

A lot of people say eating healthy is neither fun nor exciting, but we’re here to prove them wrong. You just need the right recipe, some killer ingredients and some positive thinking - and we promise, this doesn’t mean having to give up chocolate for kale! Getting into the habit of eating well can be tough, but once you have it down, it can really stick. Take charge of your diet and eat what makes you feel satisfied and strong.
